The Digital Side-Hug: Andy Root (Bonhoeffer as Youth Worker & the Theological Turn in Youth Ministry)

November 16, 2014 | David Rubio

Andrew Root, PhD - the Olson Baalson Associate Professor of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis, MN & author of the Theological Journey Through Youth Ministry series (What I call the Chronicles of Nadia!) - joins Rubio via Skype to talk about his new book: “Bonhoeffer as Youth Worker”.  After “getting the Led out” and establishing that he was raised by cable television, Root defines the “Theological Turn” in youth ministry and then tells several stories & highlights ministry themes from the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer that have relevance for those working with teenagers today who are interested in making this turn.

Pay close attention to Andy’s identification of three major concepts from Bonhoeffer’s “Eight Theses on Youth Work” (beginning at 27:45) which are an unmistakable shot across the bow of our churches in North America.
