It is common to interpret Jesus' parables about the path, rocky soil, thorns, and rich soil in terms of individual people. That is, we deem some people as people of the "path" or some people as people who embody the "thorns" or some people as people of the "rocky soil".
But, Jesus is more perceptive than this.
He knows that in different seasons of our lives, we might become the different "soils" mentioned in the parable. Or, we are all a combination of all four, wrestling with the Spirit to become all the Jesus intends us to be: people who hear, understand, and bear kingdom fruit (Matt. 13:23).
Jesus and his kingdom attempt to take root in all kinds of places. But the places they flourish the most are the places in which the soil has been cared for, esteemed, and cultivated. Healthy soil produces life-giving fruit. That's the way it works in agriculture. That's the way it works in our hearts (Matt. 13:19).
Join me in praying this prayer this week: God, search our hearts. Search the depths of our souls. Push back all darkness with the light of your love, power, and hope. Plant deep within us a vision for the coming day, the fulfillment of your promises to creation, humanity, and the church. Give us the courage to pursue you as you pursue us.
