    WISDOM FROM THE GENERATIONS

    Josh Graves

    1. Proverbs 22:6, “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.” How have you understood this text before kids vs. after having children? If you do not have children, then discuss how you view this from a single adult, or couple without children, perspective.
    2. Eph 6:1-4, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother—this is the first commandment with a promise so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
      • Discuss the “Father’s do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord”.
        • How do you hear this now vs before you were a parent?
        • How do you understand this text if you are not a parent? Discuss your experience with your own father.
      • Paul is calling the Church at Ephesus to live to a higher standard. To not view family as currency, but as those to be protected and loved, something that was not the practice in that day. Discuss how this could be lived out today in 2024?
      • Paul does not address mothers, but if you are a woman what would be something you would want to hear about motherhood prior to becoming a mother?
    3. Parenting is hard, and all make mistakes. There is no perfect parent except God. Discuss mistakes you have made and how you would correct them if you have the opportunity.
    4. Name 4 things you learned from your parents that you have retained and either use with your own family or you would pass on to the next generation? Discuss why you will keep and build on these principles.
    5. Name 4 things you learned from your parents that you will not pass on to the next generation. Discuss why you will omit these practices.
