Our Story |
There has been a family of people worshiping
on Otter Creek Road since 1929. It was a "house church"
then, meeting initially in the home of Mr. & Mrs. J.G. Campbell.
In fact, it was the first church of any kind in the community.
The significance of a congregation nearby in the community is
probably lost on us living in an age of e-mail and space walks,
but then it was an important part of the fabric of this community.
A building came along in about a year. Another in 1950. As transportation
became more convenient, the congregation began growing beyond
its immediate geography. It began answering to greater community
needs:
- In 1960, it started a kindergarten which
has grown into a highly respected pre-school education program.
- It founded AGAPE (Association for Guidance, Aid, Placement and
Empathy, Inc.) which is today an independent child placement
and family counseling organization that has served as a model
for similar organizations in other cities.
- In l997, work began to build a quality
child care and family counseling center for working parents
in Nashville's inner city. The Wayne Reed Day Care Center
is located downtown near the Howard School office facility.
- The congregation is also presently involved
in medical and educational outreaches in Central America
and Africa.
In short, while our heritage is in God and His Son, our history
is one of a community congregation that welcomes all comers
and seeks opportunities to serve and comfort in His name. |
